OEM vs. Aftermarket Parts

An OEM (original equipment manufacturer) Apple part is what you would find on an original iPad®, iPhone®, or iPod®.  Brand new Apple OEM parts are not available to any consumers, vendors or repair shops for purchase.  Apple, Inc. does not sell its parts to vendors, distributors, or repair shops.  Apple does not actually make any parts, they have certain manufacturers produce them to Apple's visual, technical, and quality requirements.  Apple, Inc. also does not allow its manufacturers, e.g., Sharp and Toshiba, to sell their parts to any vendors, distributors, or repair shops.  The only way to obtain a legitimate Apple OEM part is by pulling it off of an iPad, iPhone, or iPod.  Beware of repair companies that claim "only they know" where to get brand new OEM parts.

All other parts on the market that are available are "aftermarket parts".  Aftermarket parts are made by third-party manufacturers that have absolutely no affiliation with Apple, Inc. There are countless numbers of third-party manufacturing companies that produce replacement parts for Apple devices.  Among these countless manufacturers, there is a wide range in the quality of the parts that they are producing.

Most of these manufacturers cut costs by producing parts that may be similar to OEM in appearance, but would never meet the      technical and quality requirements that Apple demands from its own manufacturers.  This is how most third-party manufacturers can offer such a low cost to distributors and other repair shops.

However, there are a handful of third-party manufacturers that despite the higher cost, produce very high quality parts that would most likely meet the same visual, technical, and quality requirements that Apple requires from their own manufacturers.  If put side-by-side, you should not be able to tell the difference between a high quality aftermarket part and an OEM part.

The primary difference between low quality LCD screens and high quality LCD screens is the type of technology used.  There are two primary types of LCDs, IPS (in-panel switching) and TFT (thin-film transistors).  IPS is the latest LCD technology and provides wider viewing angles, richer color, and better contrast.  This is the same technology Apple uses in the iPads, iPhones, and iPods.  TFT is a technology that is typically used in older LCD panels and does not offer the same quality as IPS panels.  TFT is used by most third-party manufactures due to its low cost

The most common issue with low quality iPad screens is that the glass is very thin and almost feels plastic-like.  When it is touched or tapped, the glass will feel and sound almost hollow.  This is typically a characteristic of a lower grade glass that is much cheaper in cost and quality.

A high quality iPad screen has a much thicker glass and feels just like the original screen .  If it is touched or tapped it will feel and sound solid and should have very little give to it.  This is what we look for when purchasing our iPad screens, regardless of the cost.

At iScreen Service, we buy only the highest quality iPhone LCD assemblies and iPad screens.  We are so confident in the quality of our parts, we offer an industry leading 1 year warranty (click here for details) with most of our repairs.  We are very specific and firm with our suppliers in the quality of parts that we require and will accept from them.  Regardless of the cost, we only buy and install parts that would meet the visual, technical, and quality requirements that Apple requires from their own manufacturers.
